Sustainable Travel

One fifth of Jersey's emissions are the result of car use.

Jersey has the highest per capita car ownership in the world. There are over 600 cars for every 1000 people on the island (2001 Census).

The energy expended and materials used in the manufacture of cars mean that considerable damage has been done before the car even leaves the forecourt. Purchasers of new vehicles expose themselves to a cocktail of noxious chemicals.

Action

  • Try walking, using the bus or cycling to work, you'll become fitter and more beautiful! You may also live longer:
The Health Promotion Unit states 'research evidence in this area has demonstrated that the use of motor vehicles reduces opportunities for and inhibits other forms of transport that are known to add years to life such as cycling and walking'.
  • Would you like to be part of a bike buddy scheme? check the bulletin board
  • Ask your employers to provide bike loans, storage and showers, many already do

Car

  • Check the how much petrol your car uses
  • Buy a small, second hand car with a good service history
  • Could you organise a car share with others at school?
  • Look after your engine with regular oiling and checking. The UK automobile association states that 50% (half) of carbon monoxide (CO) emissions are produced by the 10%of vehicles whose engines aren't working properly.

Aeroplane

  • Try and use the boat and train instead
  • Holiday locally, The Channel Islands have some of the best beaches in the world, have you explored Sark, Herm and the French coast?
  • If you do have to use the aeroplane talk to the Men Of The Trees about their carbon compensation scheme. It can't undo the damage in the short term but is a way of giving back
